Hostel folded in a series of environmental benefits

• What: green roof and exterior wall, solar array and gray water recycling systems

• How does it work? Crash Pad owners along And Rose and Max Poppel tries to integrate the system in the building they are friendly. Solar panels, which will get plugged into the power grid next week, serves as the front door awnings over them. Roof and walls covered with vegetation, reduce storm water runoff and helps protect the building. Gray water, or wastewater, from the kitchen is collected and used for toilet, reduce water consumption.

• Why do it this way? Crash Pad works to become a LEED platinum certified building third in Chattanooga, title given to buildings that meet strict environment. The building already has a host of green features, e.g. many materials construction came from recycled materials locally. "We do everything in our power to build an energy efficient, cool buildings," said Rose. "If we have a choice, why not?"

• Does it cost? Solar Array, installed by the Tennessee Solar solutions, the cost of $ 4,000. Green roof cost $ 50,000.
